Deforestation And Global Warming
|
Trees a play a vital role in our eco system. Deforestation means clearing of vegetation for commercial logging, agriculture, road and railways, forests fires, mining, drilling, fuel wood collection and urban sprawl for increasing population. Among these, agriculture is the biggest driver of deforestation. Farmers cut the trees for making room for planting of crops or grazing the livestock. Many small farmers clear a few acres of land and feed their families by cutting down the trees and also burning them in a process known as "slash and burn" agriculture. Major factors influencing deforestation after agriculture is logging for wood and paper products, followed by urban sprawl. Increase in cutting of the trees is disturbing the environmental balance. Deforestation and global warming is creating many adverse effects to our environment. Forests absorb large amount of energy and also stimulate convection currents in air which will enhance the production of rainfall. Deforestation disturbs the water cycle which inturn makes the environment drier, because trees draw water from the soil and transmigrates into atmosphere. We find severe climatic changes due to deforestation. Vegetation absorbs most of the atmospheric carbon for photosynthesis process, which in turn produces the oxygen we breathe.
Deforestation by burning will increase the amount of carbon di oxide, carbon monoxide, methane and other trace gases in the atmosphere, which is known as "green house effect". Forests are important sink for carbon di oxide. Other green house gases like methane and nitrogen oxide trap the atmospheric heat and increse the average temperature of the earth's surface which is termed as global warming. Global warming makes melting of glaciers, which will result in the increse in sea levels. This process is a serious threat to the life on the earth especially near the coast line. Global warming has already begun, by melting of ice caps near the polar region and sea level is rising. Vegetation is the house for animals. By deforestation we are destructing these animals. Global warming that is caused by deforestation is endangering the plant and animal life, which in turn is disturbing the environmental balance. It is observed that global warming due to fossil fuel burning and also deforestation, which is causing the increase of the green gases in the atmosphere, is also effecting the green house gas effect. Some of the effects of global warming are extreme weather conditions, increse in diseases and varying agriculture yields etc. Since deforestation is the main reason for global warming, it is our responsibility to show more concern towards avoiding cutting of the trees. Prevention of cutting of the trees i.e, deforestation will make the living environment more comfortable and fresh for the people to live on this earth. |
